A startup came to Karen Hernandez with no formal HR policies and no documentation. She built its HR infrastructure from the ground up, created every document and internal policy it needed, and trained the staff on compliance herself. The company came out of the project ready to scale with confidence.

Karen Hernandez is the founder of Empower HR Solutions, a Las Vegas human resources consulting firm that helps organizations build workplaces rooted in empathy, collaboration, and growth. She brings more than 10 years of experience guiding organizations through the full employee lifecycle, and she is a member of The Entreprenista League. Now she is growing the firm toward a team of its own.

“Kindness is key to success,” Karen says.

What she built next says as much about kindness as it does about human resources.

HR rooted in compassion and respect

Karen started the firm with a clear belief about her field: HR “should be about people, communication, and treating others with compassion and respect.” Motherhood was the primary catalyst, and the business gives her the flexibility to work from home and stay involved in her children’s daily lives.

She aims to be a trusted, neutral partner with practical solutions, because she believes everyone deserves high-quality, compassionate HR support. “My approach is rooted in presence and availability, ensuring that I am always there to champion both the business and its people,” she says.

“We believe that when workplaces are built on kindness and understanding, the impact extends far beyond the office,” her firm’s website reads.

From recruitment to offboarding

Karen specializes in end-to-end human resources management, from recruitment and onboarding to talent development, performance management, and offboarding. Her background lets her streamline HR operations and build a high-performing culture that aligns with a company’s long-term goals.

She also handles HR strategy and regulatory compliance, including the details of labor regulations and organizational structure that keep operations running smoothly and legal risk low. Clients can bring her in for employee handbooks, culture and alignment work, or fractional HR, which gives a business experienced, part-time HR leadership when it needs it.

Her own hiring advice is practical. She leans on behavioral interview questions, likes asking candidates about their long-term career plans to gauge alignment with company goals, and keeps every interview under 10 questions.

Her first podcast episode

Karen recently stepped out of her comfort zone to share her voice and business story on her first-ever podcast episode, recorded for the Latin Chamber of Commerce. She typically avoids being on video. “This was a significant personal and professional milestone for me,” she says.

Picking herself back up

Building the business has taught Karen the true meaning of resilience. “I have learned that it is okay to experience the difficult moments, to cry, feel the weight of the challenges, and lean into the vulnerability of the founder journey, as long as I pick myself back up and keep moving forward,” she says.

She is in the early days of her firm and open about the doubt that comes with it. In the hard stretches, she turns to mentors and peers for guidance and uses what she learns as fuel to keep growing.

Community and a growing team

The lesson she wishes she had known sooner is how important community is in business. “I’ve learned that with a supportive community behind you, there is truly no limit to what you can accomplish,” she says.

Next, Karen plans to expand her client base, build a strong team, and take the firm’s services into other states so she can support more organizations.
