Katy Chen Mazzara Brings Financial Freedom to Creative Freelancers

The former television producer pairs practical money strategy with trauma-informed coaching for creatives who want their talent to pay the bills.

October 21, 2026

Before she was a money coach, Katy Chen Mazzara spent 15 years as a freelance television producer. She loved the work and often wondered when the next paycheck would arrive. Today, she helps creative freelancers and founders make more money, build lasting wealth, and keep doing what they love. She has lived the problem she solves.

Katy Chen Mazzara is a trauma-informed master financial wellness coach and the founder of Katy Chen Mazzara Money Mentor and the Financial Freedom for Creatives Club. For 8 years she has helped clients bring compassion, clarity, and a practical plan to their money, and she is a member of The Entreprenista League. Her work begins with how money feels.

“Knowing what to do and feeling ready to do it don’t always arrive at the same time,” Katy says.

Her path from television producer to money mentor came down to a skill she learned in journalism: listening for the story beneath the story.

A producer’s ear for the story beneath the story

Katy spent more than 15 years in entertainment and media as a journalist, documentary filmmaker, and television producer. She led teams, managed million-dollar budgets, and rode the ups and downs of the freelance life herself.

“Journalism taught me to stay curious, ask meaningful questions, and listen for the story beneath the story,” she says. “Producing taught me how to take a big, beautiful idea and figure out what it would actually take to make it happen.”

She also watched 3 women stay in harmful situations because they lacked the money to leave. Watching them feel trapped shaped her mission, which is to help people build the financial freedom to make choices based on their values and dreams. She trained for the work with a certificate in Personal Financial Planning from UC Berkeley and a certification as a trauma-informed master coach.

Start before you’re ready

When she was getting started, Katy kept working on her website, and there was always something else to tweak. Then she saw a post in a Facebook group for women television producers. Someone was looking for a financial expert who could help her pay off debt, save for a house, and understand the ups and downs of the entertainment industry.

“I remember thinking, ‘This is a sign from God! Who else is she talking to but me?’” she says.

She finished the website, published it, and responded. The woman became her first client who was not already a friend. “My advice is to prepare thoughtfully, then give yourself permission to begin,” Katy says.

When 75 creatives joined the club

Katy knew the business was working at the first launch of the Financial Freedom for Creatives Club. Her email list was small, and she was hoping 15 people would join. Then 75 signed up. “So much for my conservative estimate!” she says.

The membership brought more consistent monthly income into her business and helped her reach 6 figures for the first time. “I was creating more financial stability for myself while helping my members do the same,” she says.

Cash under the mattress and higher rates

Katy brings together practical financial strategy, trauma-informed coaching, and the spiritual and energetic side of money. “I believe our financial life is a direct reflection of our emotional life,” she says.

One club member, an actress and embodiment coach in her 70s, kept cash under her mattress and believed it was too late to start investing. Inside the club, she explored that fear and opened an investment account. She has since reported $50,000 in investment gains, and she booked a role on a Netflix show after nearly giving up on acting.

Another client already knew plenty about financial planning, since her husband is a financial advisor. Fear and deeply rooted beliefs kept her from raising her rates. She described Katy’s approach as gentle guidance with “just the right amount of pushing,” and she went on to raise her rates, work with fewer clients, hire a subcontractor and 2 interns, and launch 2 online businesses.

Her own needs belong in the plan

Caring deeply for clients while also caring for her business and herself has been one of Katy’s biggest challenges. Setting boundaries, charging in ways that reflect her time and expertise, and asking for help have all been part of the answer. “The lesson I keep coming back to is that my needs belong in the plan,” she says.

If she could tell her earlier self one thing, it would be to ask sooner. “You can be good at what you do and still need help building the business around it,” she says.

December workshops and a Las Vegas stage

Katy recently hosted her Embody Abundance retreat and is booked to speak at the PMRE conference in Las Vegas in November 2026, her highest-paid speaking engagement to date. Next up are her Financial Freedom Formula workshops on December 7th, 9th, and 11th, 2026, which lead into the next enrollment for the Financial Freedom for Creatives Club.

Over the next few years, she plans to expand her group coaching, speak to more creative and entrepreneurial communities, and host more intimate retreats. “My vision is to help more people build a prosperous life around their gifts, with money that supports them, work that lights them up, and room to enjoy both,” she says.
