Nicholle Overkamp Measures Wealth in Options at Wilcox Financial Group

The CEO built a team-based financial planning firm for ambitious women, and nearly all of its growth has come from referrals.

Nicholle Overkamp has ignored a lot of advice about how a financial firm should be built. Her advisors are salaried, with no individual product sales goals and no separate books of business, and they serve every client as a team. Fifteen years in, 99% of the firm’s growth has come from referrals.

Nicholle Overkamp is the CEO and founder of Wilcox Financial Group, a boutique financial planning and wealth management firm serving ambitious women founders and leaders, and she is a member of the Entreprenista League. Her clients are often doing well and still asking whether they are on track, what they might be missing, and what all their hard work is building. She built the firm to answer them.

“Money is a tool. The real goal is helping people build enough wealth, confidence, and clarity that they have choices,” Nicholle says.

Building the firm women deserve

Before starting her own firm, Nicholle spent years inside the financial services industry. She learned the technical side of planning, investments, insurance, and wealth management, and she saw how often women were underestimated, dismissed, or sold to. “I hated it,” she says.

Growing up with a single mom who lacked financial confidence and independence, she never wanted women to believe they needed someone else to create security for them. In a male-dominated industry, she learned firsthand what it felt like to be underestimated herself.

“I was told I wouldn’t make it and sat in rooms where women were treated differently,” she says. “The more I saw, the more convinced I became that women deserved better.”

So she built an education-first, people-first firm focused on outcomes.

Walking away from 40% of her revenue

“To keep things interesting, life gave me an education no designation ever could,” Nicholle says. A family crisis made her a full-time caregiver overnight while she was running a growing business, managing a household, and making financial decisions in the middle of it all.

To create the capacity her life required, she walked away from roughly 40% of her revenue. It was terrifying, and it settled what she believes about money: options are the goal.

“I want them to understand their money, trust themselves with it, and know they are capable of creating their own security,” she says of the women she serves. She wants them prepared before the divorce, the diagnosis, the business disruption, or the caregiving responsibility arrives.

The money and the life around it

Wilcox Financial Group was designed to remove many of the conflicts and fragmentation Nicholle saw across financial services. Advisors work as a team, so a recommendation rests on what is right for the client. “That matters because trust matters,” she says.

The firm also plans across every piece at once. Investments, cash flow, taxes, insurance, retirement, estate planning, business decisions, and major life transitions become one cohesive strategy, with financial coaching and the psychology of money built in. “We connect the pieces, both the money and the life around it,” Nicholle says.

Finding the gaps before they get expensive

Many of her clients are successful on paper. They earn well, save consistently, and have retirement accounts, investments, and a CPA, yet no one is looking at how those decisions work together.

One client came to the firm in exactly that position. The team found money sitting in cash without a clear purpose, retirement opportunities that were not fully coordinated with her income, and tax strategies that needed to be weighed across several accounts. Even a backdoor Roth, which sounded like an obvious move at her income level, could have created an unexpected tax bill if the team had not accounted for the IRS pro rata rule.

“The opportunity cost lives in the gaps,” Nicholle says. “Our work is to find those gaps before they become expensive.” For this client, a collection of good financial decisions became one coordinated wealth strategy.

Reaching 100,000 women

Nicholle says being named 2025 Financial Advisor of the Year told her she is on the right track. “I have this massive, audacious dream of being known as the planning firm for women,” she says. “I want our brand to be synonymous with women and wealth!”

Over the next few years she wants to reach 100,000 women through media, talks, and client work, breaking barriers around women’s ability to create and keep wealth.

Asking for help is a superpower

Growth asked Nicholle to lead differently. Early on she could outwork almost anyone, selling, serving clients, and solving problems herself. Scaling meant hiring before she felt ready, delegating things she was good at, and building a company that could serve clients exceptionally well without everything running through her.

The one thing she wishes she had known at the start is about help. “Asking for help is the most powerful thing you can do,” she says. “I used to hold the belief I had to do it all alone and was terrified of being judged. Now I realize it’s such a superpower.”

Her advice for aspiring founders runs on instinct. “Always listen to your gut, trust your intuition, and act before you’re ready,” she says.
