Hormones, Hustle, and Healing: My Perimenopause Survival Plan for Female Founders
September 1, 2025
When I started my online business nearly 10 years ago, I was juggling client appointments and growing my business between my baby’s nap schedule. Fast forward to today: I’m 43, raising two young boys with my husband, running a business and a backyard farm, and navigating the very real challenges of early perimenopause.
Two years ago, I hit a wall of burnout and decided to redesign my business so it was more sustainable. Like many middle-aged female founders, I’ve made it my mission to heal from entrepreneurial burnout, rebalance my hormones, and create a way of doing business that supports both my health and my success.
I’ve been working with a functional medicine doctor, an acupuncturist, a chiropractor, and a traditional therapist. As an enneagram 8, a manifesting generator, and a high-achiever, it’s like my factory setting is to work as hard as possible!
I write this article, not as an expert in hormones, but as a friend. This isn’t medical advice, it’s my unfiltered personal experience. It’s my intention to help you not feel alone as you navigate through perimenopause as a high-achiever, doing it all, but low-key struggling.
Rejecting “Suffering in Silence”
For years, women were expected to “tough out” menopause in silence. Thankfully, the narrative is shifting, but finding the right information can feel like a second full-time job.
If you’re like me, you’re probably piecing together your personal perimenopause wellness plan by listening to podcasts, reading books, and taking advice from strangers on social media. And thank God for all of the Baby Boomer women who took action to make this information mainstream after being blindsided when menopause creeped up on them.
The good news is today, we have reliable resources at our fingertips.
The bad news is that we can easily get overwhelmed. And when your plate is already full from hustling in business, it’s daunting to consider treating symptoms that can easily be misdiagnosed.
For those of us who are also founders, entrepreneurs, or leaders in the corporate world, we’ve got an extra element of stress that can often leave us feeling overwhelmed.
According to Goop, the 8 main symptoms of perimenopause are:
- Irregular periods.
- Hot flashes.
- Vaginal dryness, painful sex, and low libido.
- Insomnia.
- Fatigue and irritability.
- Weight gain.
- Anxiety, depression, and brain fog.
- Thinning hair.
If you’re left questioning why you’re working so hard to get but nothing seems to be working, welcome to the perimenopause club, friend.
When Your Hormones Don’t Care About Your Hustle
Navigating hormone fluctuations can be daunting for anyone, but what if you’re also the boss or the leader everyone depends on?
I used to believe I could push through anything; another launch, a late night, putting out fires. I think that’s why my perimenopause symptoms snuck up on me…weight gain, poor sleep, and unrelenting stress. I got used to it, and frankly, it’s statistically normal for entrepreneurs to experience these things when there’s so much responsibility on our plates.
For years, I ran my business with intensity, but eventually, I didn’t want to feel that way anymore. I was losing my edge! I built and scaled my business trusting my intuition, but when I was hustling, I all but stopped trusting that instinct which led to burning out.
When I finally prioritized my health, my business began to flow again. The truth is you can’t out-hustle your hormones!
Stress, Sleep, and Showing Up Anyway
My functional medicine doctor muscle-tested me to see what was the priority, my body all but screamed “lower stress ASAP!” The inconsistent sleep patterns were apparently due to my cortisol, the stress hormone, that spikes around 3-4am, thus waking me up. (Shout-out to the 3am club!)
When we prioritized stress reduction it had a direct effect on balancing my hormones, which helped me sleep better, and when I slept better, my performance during the work day improved immensely.
One day, I intuitively saw an image of a glass. It was clean but there was calcification stuck to the glass. It made me realize that while my work stress has lowered tremendously, there’s still daily life stressors. The daily work is to clear the stress “residue” that’s been built up in my body while not adding more.
If you’ve been in the “founder exhaustion cycle” your symptoms could be different than mine. A close friend in her 50s, also a founder, had brain fog. She recalled being in the middle of a meeting and literally forgetting what she was saying to her team. Her saving grace was her gynecologist who ordered hormone testing. The tests reported her hormone levels were extremely low and she started hormone replacement therapy (HRT). She said, “it was like the fog lifted and some of the stubborn weight seemed to fall off.”
Another friend, 60, was advised by doctors that HRT was contraindicated due to her past history of breast cancer. She later had to work with specialists after discovering she had osteoporosis, and being on HRT could help slow down bone loss due to menopause and low hormone levels.
There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, but here’s what I’ve been working on…
My Perimenopause Survival Plan
Perimenopause is so personal. I chose to focus on 3 areas…
1. Mindset Shifts
- Accepting that what worked in my 20s/30s no longer works now.
- Prioritizing fun and joy (gardening, soccer coaching, friend dates) as medicine.
- Letting “slowing down” be a strategy, not a failure.
2. Wellness Habits
- No more fasted workouts — adding protein before movement. (Thanks to Dr. Stacy Sims).
- Focusing on 30g protein/meal, 100g per day.
- Resistance training with a weighted vest and treadmill climbs.
- Supplements to lower stress: Ashwagandha, 5-HTP, L-Theanine, Cortisol Control, Calm: Sleep gummies.
- Bi-weekly acupuncture for stress and sleep.
- Weekly chiropractic adjustments for pain reduction.
- Weekly talk therapy to reduce stress.
Business Boundaries
- Simplifying systems, processes, and team.
- Taking real mid-day lunch breaks, increasing hydration, and grounding in the grass.
- Protecting mornings and evenings for family and self-care.
Redefining Success Through Healing
Success isn’t just about growth and revenue, it’s about sustainability. For folks just starting out, it’s exciting to bring ideas into reality and overcome mental blocks and personal challenges. But as the years go on, we have to reevaluate how we’re feeling and what’s working for us.
Hormone health is leadership health. Our bodies, our energy, and our businesses are inseparable. I believe our business is a catalyst for our personal growth…and vice versa. Contrary to your biggest fears and popular belief, making space for more joy, play, and downtime aren’t distractions, they’re productivity and energetic alignment strategies!
Perimenopause and menopause isn’t the end of ambition, you’re actually on the leading edge of wiser and more sustainable leadership. The kind of leadership that understands the meaning of work-life balance and is more human-centric.
Over nearly a decade in online business, I’ve solely hired women. Most of which are also mothers. Creating a team dynamic that understands work is the priority but also has empathy for sick kids, half-days, holidays, or snow days!
I believe women are reclaiming their bodies, hormones, and intuition to dismantle the outdated, male-dominated model of business — and in its place, we’re building a new paradigm of leadership: one that’s emotionally intelligent, intuitive, and deeply aligned with sustainable growth and impact.
We’re done squeezing into a male-made mold. Women are creating a new model of business built on alignment, not exhaustion.
Reminder, you’re not alone. Hormones, hustle, and healing are all connected — and understanding your energy is the first step. That’s why I created my free quiz to help you uncover where your energy is blocked and how to start shifting it today.
Take the quiz and start feeling your best, today!
