Rani Chirumamilla Turned 20 Years of Biotech Into Monaesi Skincare

How a biotechnology Ph.D. and a long search for gentle skincare became a self-funded, clinically tested plant-based brand.

September 8, 2026

Monaesi Skincare sells clinically tested and dermatologist-tested formulas, and it has grown without outside capital. The founder behind it holds a Ph.D. in biotechnology and spent more than 20 years in research and development across biopharmaceuticals, personal care, and specialty chemicals. Rani Chirumamilla was a research scientist for 20 years before becoming a founder.

Rani Chirumamilla, Ph.D., is the founder of Monaesi Skincare, a science-driven, plant-based brand focused on skin health, skin longevity, and sustainability. She is a member of the Entreprenista League, and she arrived in the skincare category by way of her own long history with sensitive skin. She never planned on building a beauty company.

“I always had a desire to build something of my own, but I never imagined that it would be a skincare company,” Rani says. Her path from the research lab to a launched skincare line came down to one unplanned career change.

The 20 years that came before Monaesi

Rani earned a Ph.D. in biotechnology after degrees in biochemistry and industrial biochemistry, then completed postdoctoral research at UT Southwestern Medical School and the University of Pennsylvania. From there, she moved into industry.

Her work covered scientific research, innovation, product development, formulation, manufacturing, quality, and commercialization. Twenty years of that work taught her how a promising molecule becomes a product someone can actually buy, and how testing stands between the two.

The career turn that became a company

For years the idea of building something of her own stayed on a shelf. “I was comfortable in my corporate career and, like many people, kept putting the dream of entrepreneurship on the back burner rather than taking the leap,” she says.

Then came the uncertainty of COVID, followed by an unexpected career transition. “The uncertainty brought on by COVID became the catalyst that finally pushed me to pursue that dream,” Rani says. She had the science, the product development experience, and the frustration she'd carried for years.

Her own search for effective, gentle skincare had never really ended. That distance between what she wanted as a consumer and what she could find on a shelf became the brief for Monaesi.

What clean means when a scientist defines it

Monaesi formulas are plant-based and built around advanced botanical actives supported by research. The brand leaves out parabens, phthalates, sulfates, PEG, silicones, added fragrance, talc, PFAS, petroleum, and mineral oil. The line runs from an Advanced Night Serum built on a plant-based retinol alternative to targeted treatments for brightness, hydration, and barrier support.

Rani walked the entire path herself. “As a scientist and first-time entrepreneur, I have taken the journey from research and formulation to manufacturing, regulatory requirements, branding, marketing, and building relationships with customers and partners,” she says. Monaesi is self-funded, and turning the idea into a real, growing brand is the accomplishment she names first.

“What makes me especially proud is that I’ve built Monaesi while staying true to the values that inspired it,” she says. “Science-backed skincare, plant-based innovation, skin health, and sustainability.”

Who Monaesi is built for

Her customers are health-conscious women and men who want high-performance skincare that supports long-term skin health. They read ingredient lists, they expect visible results, and they care how a formula was made. Skincare professionals and wellness-focused businesses come to the line for the same reasons.

A scientist’s voice in the industry conversation

Over the past year, Rani was invited to speak at the BIOTECH Conference in New York, where she presented her scientific perspective on how consumers perceive natural ingredients. Standing in that room as both a researcher and a founder is the part she keeps coming back to.

“It was especially meaningful to bring my expertise as a scientist and founder into a broader industry conversation,” she says.

Recognition has come from several directions. Monaesi won a Clean Emerging Beauty Brand award; Rani has appeared on ABC and FOX segments and joined a Vegan Summit panel; her story ran in Voyage Dallas, and she has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who in America.

“They’ve allowed me to contribute my scientific expertise to broader conversations around skincare, consumer education, and the future of clean and sustainable beauty,” she says.

Partnerships, personalization, and what comes next

The next stage is about reach and precision.

Rani is building partnerships with retail, med spas, skincare professionals, and wellness businesses, and developing a more personalized skincare experience that uses technology and data to help customers understand their skin and find the routine that fits it. More science-backed, plant-based formulations are in the pipeline, along with more scalable operations and a stronger digital presence.

She wants Monaesi to give something back too, through community initiatives and, over time, scholarship programs that support education and opportunity for others.

Her advice for anyone still waiting for the right moment is direct. “Believe in your idea and don’t wait for the perfect time to start. Take the first step, learn as you go, and be willing to adapt.”

“Don’t be afraid to ask for help, build relationships, and surround yourself with people who support and challenge you. Entrepreneurship is a journey, and you don’t have to figure it all out on your own.”
