What starts as a side project can take on a life of its own.
For Sammi Cohen, creating content began as a way to reconnect with her creativity during long days working in Amazon logistics. Over time, that outlet evolved into Social Currency, a media platform exploring the intersection of business and culture.
There wasn’t a clear roadmap from the start. Sammi followed what held her attention, tested different ideas, and paid close attention to what resonated. Each iteration brought more clarity, helping her shape both her voice and the direction of the platform.
Her story is a reflection of what it looks like to build something over time. Consistency, curiosity, and a willingness to keep going, even when the outcome isn’t fully defined, played a central role in getting her there.

It began during a moment of creative burnout, when she needed something of her own:
“So the origin story was actually back in the pandemic when a lot of people were stuck at home… I was working at Amazon at the time. And I got to this point where I was so drained creatively. And I really was looking for a creative outlet of some kind.
My whole life, I've been obsessed with business… I loved hearing the stories of businesses that had a little bit more of a rocky journey and really understanding the why behind certain decisions that founders would make… how a company was able to get to the point that they were at today and really understanding all of the nuances there.”
Even her first attempt, imperfect as it was, set everything in motion:
“I put out my first video on TikTok actually in 2022, still very much working at Amazon thinking, this is just a fun little hobby…
And looking back on that video, I'm like, cringing. It was so bad. But also a note for the listeners, always start before you're ready. Always. Like, if you wait until you're ready, you will never be ready… it's okay if it's embarrassing when you're looking back because that means that you've likely progressed and you've really been able to refine your product as you go.”
That early experience led to a realization about what she actually loved doing:
“I realized as soon as that video went live that I loved the process… not only just the creative side of putting together the final product, but the research… putting it into a really cohesive minute to minute and a half piece.
It sounds so cheesy, but from that very first video, I thought, "I am supposed to be doing this. Like, I love it.”
Then one unexpected moment revealed a much bigger opportunity:
“A few weeks in, one of the videos that I put out… I wake up the next morning… and it has over a million views. And I'm like, whoa, what is this?
I realized that there was this really unique intersection between business and culture… people really wanted to see that type of content in a way that wasn't overly buttoned up… something that was business focused, but also really entertaining and had a little bit of an edge.”
Finding her true niche took time, experimentation, and letting go of what wasn’t aligned:
“When I first started, I kind of leaned very hard into pop culture… and I realized very early on that even though I love pop culture, the only part that's really interesting to me is the part that intersects with business…
So I took a step back and I realized… what is something I can really stick with… I realized I am so excited about the business thing and it's been consistent throughout my life… this is going to be my space.”
When she finally leaned into that clarity, everything changed quickly:
“I really hit my stride… where I put out this series about the rise and fall of direct to consumer companies…
And I very, very quickly saw that engagement shot up when I was talking about these topics and I was so passionate about it. So I realized, okay, I love doing this. This is clearly something that's working well on social… let me double down.”
Behind the scenes, that “overnight success” was built on years of consistency and risk:
“I hustled for the last three years to get to where I am now, like crazy hours… I did it because I wanted to get to the point where I can create my own destiny.
And if I've learned anything… things can change in the best way so quickly. Like all it takes is one viral video… one moment… and it can have wild and transformative impact on your life, on your income, on the business that you hope to build someday.”
