Please share a brief introduction and your business:
I own a PR agency and media company called Quotable Media Co. I started the agency first, where we work to elevate and amplify female founders. In the following years, I started hosting a podcast and publishing a magazine, both of which also are focused on female founders. I am passionate about telling the stories of incredible women and supporting them in building their businesses through strategic visibility.
Are you a mamaprenista?
Yes. I think the most important thing is to stay aware of your priorities in each season, and be willing to shift things in your life or business throughout the year or as needed in order to stay supported in those. Some years it may be more important to be there for school pickup and so you hire more support in the business for that time of day, and some years you may need to push at work and know you have the right kind of support set up at home to keep things running in a way that feels good. Don't get so stuck in a habit or routine that you start setting things up in the other order- always lead with the priorities you want to focus on right now and arrange around them. That's the beauty of being a business owner.
Take us back to when you launched? What was your marketing strategy?
My clients all came by word of mouth and referral at the beginning. This was before instagram existed or businesses used social media in any way. Doing a great job and having results that spoke for themselves, especially within a small industry niche (I was solely doing restaurant PR at the beginning, so it was obvious when my clients got lots of media attention, and then others wanted that kind of attention too) led to natural growth.
Did you always know you wanted to be an entrepreneur?
I never intended to be an entrepreneur. I had just never really considered it. It started out of necessity, when I needed more work and realized I would rather take on my own clients and have more control over how I ran the projects than I did at the agency I had been working at.
What accomplishments are you the most proud of to date in your business?
I was named to the 40 Under 40 by Boston Business Journal a few years ago, which was a big honor. Celebrating the 10 year anniversary of my business (about 3 years ago now) also felt like a big accomplishment in itself because so many businesses don't make it that long.
What is one thing you wish you had known when you started your Entreprenista journey?
I wish I had known more about pricing structures for my industry and how much other people were charging. I feel like we (still, but especially then) don't talk enough about money, and since I didn't know other people with similar businesses back then I had nobody to ask. I think I undercharged for years because I didn't know what to compare my pricing to or base it on, especially as a 23 year old business owner who just felt lucky to get to work for myself but also didn't consider my company comparable to larger firms.
When hiring, what is your go-to interview question?
I love to ask how their previous supervisor, their best friend, and their biggest enemy would all describe them in one word or sentence. It's always enlightening to see how they answer that.
What did you do before starting your own business?
I started my business one year after graduating college. I had studied PR and interned and worked at several agencies and in-house at a variety of companies through that time, and ended up taking on my own clients within a year of graduating, essentially starting my own business.
What made you take the leap to start your own business?
It wasn't a leap, it was a slow slide. I started with one small client on the side while I was working at another small agency that didn't have quite a full-time roster for me. From there I took on more and more clients until I was working more on my own clients than for the other agency. It wasn't until that point that I really realized I had started a business.
Do you have any recent wins?
I was named Best Publicist in Boston by a local business group last year!
Who are your customers?
Female founders who are out to change the world.
What's your top productivity tip?
If it's going to take 5 minutes or less, just do it now!
What's your favorite business tool?
I just feel like the zoom plug in for my Google calendar is probably my favorite and most used tool. It's not groundbreaking, but it makes it so easy to set up meetings in one click.
How do you avoid burn-out?
This depends so much on the person and your design, but I personally need rest and to give myself space from what I'm doing. Giving myself time to do things that are unrelated to work, like reading a novel or getting a massage are important to build in consistently.
What advice do you have for aspiring Entreprenistas?
Decide what you want to be known for, and do everything with that in mind. The best thing you can do to set yourself up for success and growth is to be known for something specific and stand out from the crowd because of that.
Alessandra Pollina did not set out to become an entrepreneur. What started as one client on the side gradually became a thriving PR agency serving female founders nationwide. From being named to the Boston Business Journal 40 Under 40 to celebrating over a decade in business and earning recognition as Best Publicist in Boston, her journey reflects steady growth built on reputation, results, and referrals.
