The Burnt English Muffin Principle: Why Sustainable Success Starts Inward

As women leading businesses, we are deeply conditioned to believe our value lies in high gear. We chase the lightning bolts, assuming fulfillment lives only in the extraordinary. Yet sustainable business success begins with the quiet permission we give ourselves to exhale.

This morning, I managed to burn my English muffin to a crisp.

It wasn’t because I don’t know my way around a kitchen. It happened because, in the four minutes it was in the toaster, I was simultaneously scanning my inbox, reviewing notes for an upcoming conference call, checking my calendar for the afternoon, and mentally drafting a strategy memo.

I wasn’t making breakfast; I was racing invisible clocks and just checking as many things off my list as possible before 9 a.m.

When the smell of burnt toast finally caught my attention, the message was impossible to ignore: I was doing entirely too much at once and not doing anything well. In that small kitchen pause, scraping char off the muffin, I realized how often we as founders trade presence for velocity. We move so fast that we forget to breathe, let alone experience the moment.

Finding the remarkable in the unremarkable moments

As women leading businesses, we are deeply conditioned to believe our value lies in high gear: the launches, the pitch wins, the relentless hustle, managing our family, and the social demands. We chase the lightning bolts, assuming fulfillment lives only in the extraordinary.

Yet true fulfillment rarely comes from the high-stakes milestones; it lives in the quiet permissions we grant ourselves to exhale.

We spend years operating under the belief that our worth must be continually earned, yet enduring outward success can only expand to the depth of our inner grounding. If we cannot anchor ourselves in the small, unremarkable moments of peace, the monumental wins will never feel like enough when they arrive.

Enter the wheel of life

When you realize your personal tire has been running on the rim, how do you recalibrate? One of the most effective executive coaching tools I share with leaders is the Wheel of Life, a self-assessment exercise generally credited to Paul J. Meyer.

Think of your life as a wheel divided into core spokes:

  1. Business & Career Vision: Are you leading intentionally, or merely extinguishing fires?
  2. Financial Security & Abundance: Beyond runway, do you personally feel secure, compensated, and at ease with money?
  3. Physical & Mental Vitality: Sleep, nourishment, nervous-system resets, and true rest.
  4. Deep Connection & Community: The quality of your inner circle: partners, family, and peers who let you take off the “founder” hat.
  5. Personal Expansion & Play: Creative joy, hobbies, and activities with absolutely zero expectation of ROI.
  6. Physical Environment: Workspaces and home sanctuaries that provide calm rather than visual noise.

When you rate each dimension from 1 to 10 and map them out, the goal isn't a flawless circle of 10s. The goal is honest visibility. An asymmetrical wheel cannot turn smoothly down the road without jarring everyone inside.

How to begin the conscious living reset

If your wheel looks bumpy, don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to fix everything by Friday. Instead, try these three intentional steps:

Find the domino category

Ask yourself: Which single area, if shifted by just two points, would naturally elevate the rest? Often, tending to neglected personal terrain, whether that means reclaiming restorative sleep, setting aside uninterrupted time for your partner, or simply laughing with friends over dinner, restores your vitality across the board. Feeding the woman first naturally gives the executive the cognitive stamina to lead with ease rather than exhaustion.

Define one non-negotiable boundary

Sustainable changes happen in miniature, whether it’s keeping the first 20 minutes of your morning entirely tech-free, a quiet walk without headphones, or logging off at 6:00 pm so you can actually taste your evening meal without mental tabs open; stake that boundary. Treat your personal commitments with the exact same reverence you give an investor meeting.

Practice the exhale

Before reacting to the next ping, opening your inbox, or rushing into the next family obligation, pause. Take two minutes to sit back, feel your feet on the ground, and simply breathe. Drop your shoulders away from your ears. Remind yourself that you have already arrived, and that your inherent worth doesn’t depend on what you cross off your list today.

Your invitation to sustainable success

The next time you catch yourself burning the toast (or mentally living three meetings into the future), take it as an invitation. Step back. Recalibrate your wheel. And remember, your outward expansion is only as strong as the peace you cultivate within.
