The First Step to Sustainable Health Habits for Female Founders

March 18, 2026

You’re heading your own company, making strategic decisions daily, and working to deliver the best experience to your audience. Then you open Instagram and see your friend training for a half-marathon. An employee mentions she’s trying a plant-based diet. Suddenly, you’re wondering if you should be doing the same.

That night, you scroll through running shoes online, stare at dozens of options, and reluctantly close the tab.

To build sustainable health habits, we must first understand what would meaningfully improve our own well-being. We must explore.

There is no shortage of behaviors that influence well-being. The questions are:

What habits do you want to build?

What impact would these habits have on your life?

What’s realistic for you right now?

Intentional and honest exploration creates clarity around these questions.

As a National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach at Mazarine Wellness, exploration is the first stage I guide clients through before transitioning into planning and action.

Why exploration matters before making health changes.

Exploration leads to clarity.

It helps you understand where you are and how you want your well-being to evolve.

Once you have this understanding, the space between those two points comes into focus. You can identify what areas of wellness feel most relevant or motivating for you.

When you skip exploration, it’s easy to pursue changes that aren’t truly aligned with your life or priorities.

What exploration looks like in health coaching.

In the exploration stage, I guide clients through several steps to build clarity.

First, we review self-assessments to understand their current lifestyle, health, and overall wellness.

Next, clients create their unique wellness vision, which becomes the foundation for future goals.

From there, we identify priorities, which are the areas they want to focus on to bridge the gap between their current lifestyle and the one they desire.

Rather than trying to improve everything at once, we focus on a few select areas and build from there.

How holistic thinking strengthens exploration.

Wellness is multidimensional. Several areas contribute to overall well-being.

  1. Physical
  1. Emotional
  1. Intellectual
  1. Occupational
  1. Interpersonal and Social
  1. Cultural
  1. Spiritual

Reflecting across these areas creates a more complete picture of your current lifestyle and wellness status. You may glean insights from areas you hadn’t previously considered. You may also start to draw connections between different dimensions.

For instance, a founder may realize they skip proper meals on days filled with back-to-back meetings. They may also notice they rarely engage in creative or intellectually stimulating activities outside of work because they feel exhausted after long hours.

Holistic thinking helps reveal connections you might otherwise miss. This perspective allows you to make more informed decisions when creating a wellness vision, clarifying priorities, and eventually setting goals.

A simple exploration exercise for founders.

Below are reflection prompts to help you begin your own exploration. Think of them as thought starters rather than an exhaustive list of questions.

  1. Physical: How would you describe your weekly movement or physical activity?
  1. Emotional: How would you describe your current stress levels?
  1. Intellectual: How often do you engage in mentally stimulating activities outside of work?
  1. Occupational: How satisfied are you with the balance between your business and personal life?
  1. Interpersonal and Social: How satisfied do you feel with your current relationships?
  1. Cultural: How does your culture influence your health behaviors?
  1. Spiritual: How do your beliefs or values influence your overall health?

Starting from this broad perspective allows you to notice what stands out as you reflect on these questions.

Identify what stands out.

Allow yourself to reflect honestly.

Where do you feel satisfied?

Where do you want to focus your energy?

What feels most meaningful to take away?

Sustainable progress often starts small, and exploration helps you identify where to begin.

Your next step.

When you're looking to set new health goals to improve how you feel, perform, or lead, start by exploring your current well-being.

Take time for yourself and begin by answering the reflection questions above. Notice what feels most relevant or meaningful to you.
