Bucket List Unlimited

One of the most beneficial tools I have implemented in my business is surprisingly simple: I journal every day and then share that entry with ChatGPT for feedback.

I first learned about this method from my coach, Nicholas Trevillian, during one of his weekly coaching meetings several months ago. Since then, it has helped me build business frameworks, eliminate needless work, focus on my priorities, and recognize ways I could approach challenges more effectively.

For women entrepreneurs, especially those running businesses without a large team, this combination of journaling and AI can provide something we often lack: dedicated space to think, reflect, and receive a different perspective.

Journaling creates space to think

When you are responsible for serving clients, creating content, marketing your business, developing offers, and managing daily operations, everything can feel urgent. You can become so focused on completing the next task that you rarely stop asking whether it is the right task.

Journaling interrupts that cycle.

Research supports the value of deliberate reflection. In a workplace study, employees who spent the final 15 minutes of their training day writing and reflecting on what they had learned performed 23% better on a subsequent assessment than employees who spent that time continuing to work. The researchers found that “learning by doing” becomes more effective when it is combined with “learning by thinking.”

Writing can also help you organize experiences, make connections, and create a more coherent narrative around what is occupying your mind. Research discussed by the American Psychological Association found that expressive writing was associated with modest improvements in working memory. Researchers proposed that organizing stressful experiences through writing may reduce intrusive thoughts and free cognitive resources for other activities.

For an entrepreneur, those benefits can translate into clearer priorities, stronger decision-making, and a better understanding of what is, and is not, working in the business.

AI adds a different perspective

Journaling gives you the raw material. AI helps you examine it.

After writing, you can share your entry with ChatGPT and ask questions such as:

  • What priorities emerge from this entry?
  • Where might I be creating unnecessary work?
  • What patterns or recurring themes do you notice?
  • Which idea could become a repeatable framework?
  • What appears to be distracting me from my main goal?
  • What are the next three practical steps based on what I wrote?

Because AI is not personally invested in your decisions, it can offer feedback without the emotions, history, or expectations that may influence people close to you. That does not mean its advice is always correct. It means you receive another perspective to consider.

You remain the decision-maker.

Use AI as an assistant, not a replacement

As a solopreneur, I appreciate AI because it can serve as an extension of the staff I do not have. It can organize information, recognize themes, challenge assumptions, and help transform scattered thoughts into actionable next steps.

However, I prefer using AI as an assistive tool rather than relying on it solely as a generative one.

When the process begins with your journal, the source material belongs to you. The stories are yours. The ideas, knowledge, frustrations, experiences, and observations are yours. You're not asking AI to manufacture your voice or create a perspective you don't hold.  Instead, it helps you understand, organize, and communicate what you have already expressed.

That distinction is especially important for women building personal brands and expertise-based businesses. Your lived experience is part of the value you offer. AI should help you express that value more clearly, not replace the authenticity that makes people want to work with you.

Create your own journaling practice

You do not need to journal for an hour or follow an elaborate routine. Start with 10 or 15 minutes. Write honestly about what happened in your business, what felt difficult, what went well, and what kept your attention.

Before sharing an entry with AI, remove confidential client information, passwords, private financial details, and anything else that should remain protected. Treat the response as feedback, not fact. Keep what resonates, question what does not, and use your own judgment before acting.

Journaling helps you access what you already know. AI helps you look at that knowledge from another angle.

Together, they can become a practical reflection system, one that helps you cut through the noise, identify your real priorities, and build your business with greater clarity and intention.
