Dr. Sarah Khan Helps Women Heal at the Root Cause
The functional nutritionist who left tech to answer the question no one would answer for her.
July 23, 2026
“Everything is normal.” Dr. Sarah Khan heard some version of that phrase for years while her own body told her otherwise. She was 14 when doctors diagnosed her with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and the long search for real answers taught her how it feels to be unwell and unheard. That experience set the course for her career.
Dr. Sarah Khan is the founder of Sarah Functional Nutrition, a virtual practice that helps women identify and address the underlying drivers of chronic illness through personalized nutrition, advanced laboratory testing, lifestyle medicine, and targeted supplementation. She earned a PhD in integrative and functional nutrition from Saybrook University, where her dissertation explored the link between vitamin D status and inflammation in women with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Plus, she holds an MBA she puts to work building a patient-centered practice.
"I help women achieve lasting health improvements rather than simply managing symptoms."
The diagnosis that redirected a career
Sarah was working as a product manager in technology when she decided to go back to school for her PhD. She lived the patient experience from the inside, and she wanted to give others the root-cause care she wished she had found.
Her clinical focus grew from there: autoimmune conditions, gut health, hormone imbalances, thyroid disorders, metabolic health, and chronic inflammation. She is happiest translating dense science into strategies that fit into real life.
Building relationships instead of chasing algorithms
Her launch did not go as planned. A business course convinced her that Instagram was the key to attracting clients, so she poured time into it, and it never felt authentic to how she naturally builds relationships.
Everything shifted when she started reaching out to allied healthcare professionals, including acupuncturists, chiropractors, physical therapists, therapists, and physicians, to understand their work and find ways to support one another’s patients. Those relationships became one of her biggest sources of referrals, and they turned into friendships and collaborations she genuinely values.
"The best growth strategy wasn’t following someone else’s blueprint. It was building a business in a way that felt authentic to who I am."
The clients who had stopped feeling heard
Sarah works with adults nationwide through virtual care. Many have seen multiple providers without lasting relief and arrive wanting to understand why they feel the way they do.
She most often supports people managing autoimmune conditions, digestive disorders such as IBS and SIBO, hormone imbalances, chronic inflammation, fatigue, brain fog, weight-loss resistance, and metabolic concerns like insulin resistance and high cholesterol, always alongside their medical care team.
A redirection mindset
One learning lesson has shaped how Sarah runs her practice. When something does not work, she treats it as a signal rather than a verdict. “Things not working is just a sign for redirection,” she says.
That outlook carried her through a recent milestone. She launched her first group program for people navigating autoimmune disease.
What’s next
Sarah wants to bring the work to more rooms through speaking engagements and workshops, widening the audience for root-cause care.
You can learn about Sarah’s virtual practice, book a discovery session, and find her group program for autoimmune support at Sarah Functional Nutrition.
